On Guard
Single channel video installation, 2018, FHD video, 18minutes, color/sound

On Guard portrays a paradox in the double role of “caring” and “guarding” by tracing the everyday tasks of a safety guard and a care-worker and finding intersections between them. Both nursing a patient and guarding a building involve a continuation of repetitive chores. Scenes of symmetry and horizons follow one another in order to accentuate the sense of rules and repetitiveness; within the scenery, K, the guard, is walking while calling someone. Within the building that seems to be tightly sealed, it becomes less and less clear what should be protected and what should be kept inside, as the daily patrol continues. By capturing objects that suddenly fall or collapse in the hallway or the underground parking lot, the video work depicts situations that are not quite out of the consciousness but yet to be fully understood. For instance, a mop falls down, a stack of chairs collapses, wires snap, and a shoe falls down; a series of daily situations increases the weight of anxiety.
