On Strike on Ground

Chroma-Key and Labyrinth started as a research project commissioned as a part of Community & Urban Research by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture in 2013-4, along with a book, On Strike on Ground, which contains interviews with 15 temporary cable workers, who were also the members of the labour union. On August 2013, I met with 15 union workers among the 500 sub-contracted cable workers who were on strike against Macquarie, the Australian company, which was complicit in, and substantially backing up, the exploitation of all the subcontractors. On Strike on Ground was originally made to be distributed to the cable workers who are working, isolated from their fellow workers. Most of the cable workers responsible for installation and sales are subcontractors. Coincidentally, all 15 union workers responded similarly to the questions that were designed to measure the changes in their lives, after they began working as temporary workers in the wake of the IMF Crisis in the late 1990s.

미궁과 크로마키는 서울문화재단 커뮤니티&도시 리서치 프로젝트의 일환으로 시작된 연구작업으로, 인 터뷰 책 노는 땅에서 파업 중과 함께 발표되었다. 노는 땅에서 파업 중은 케이블 비정규직 노동조합원의 인터뷰가 실린 핸드북이다. 2013년 8월 파업, 500여 명의 하도급 케이블 노동자가 뭉 쳐 맥쿼리Macquarie (실사용자)사를 상대로 노동착취에 맞선 투쟁 중에 15명의 조합원을 만났다. 이 책은 애 초에 분절된 단위에서 일하는 케이블 노동자에게 배포하는 것으로 기획되었다 - 케이블 설치 및 영업 노동자 들은 서열화된 구조 (하도급)에서 일한다. C&M의 인터넷 설치기사는 간접고용자로, 갑, 을, 병, 정 구조로 지역 영업소에 소속되어 있다 – 인터뷰는 각 개인의 삶과 노조결성 이후의 의식변화를 중점으로 질문하고 있는데, 공교롭게도 15명 모두가 IMF 이후 케이블 비정규직으로 일하며 비슷한 삶의 변화를 겪고 있음을 전한다. 그런 점에서 이 책은, 시각예술이 할 수 있는 표현이나 수사를 보여주는 ‘작업’이라기 보다 ‘사회 문화 연구서’에 가 깝다고 말할 수 있겠다.
